Weekly History and Geography - 26

An editorial cartoon, also known as a political cartoon, is an illustration or comic strip containing a political or social message, that usually relates to current events or personalities.

The following three cartoons have to do with European colonialism.  Study each cartoon carefully and then response to the following reflection questions on the blog:  

1.  What do you think cartoon #1 is trying to state?  Explain.





















 2.  What is the irony (use of words to convey the opposite of their meaning) in cartoon #2?  Explain.
3.  Describe the action taking place in cartoon #3.

    1) the boats are not coming to get you, is was just a predction.
    2) he wants them to be slaves
    3)it is his land.

    The Indian was afraid that the person would kill him so he killed the person.

    2.

    The blacks think they are being given a cruise while they are really being sent into slavery.

    3.

    This cartoon shows the Europeans exploring or creating ways to ship slaves.

    1)The European sailors are coming in and will kill the natives.
    2)The irony is he is not a nice man he wants to sell them as slaves.
    3)The man is acting like he owns or is king of Africa.

    1. Its trying to state that the natives were killing each other.
    2. That the slaves were willing to go.
    3. that the guy explored all of Africa.

    1.The European's are coming to shore to kill the Native American's, for the land.

    2.They are calling him a nice man even though he is not because they don't want him to take him to slavery.

    3.Acting like he owns Africa.

    Question 1- He says that he is paranoid and that the world is coming after him and there is ships are in the background coming to the shore where there at.

    Question 2- They "Nice Man want them to take a Black Cruise to America" The cartoon is basically saying "Hey come over to America and Be our slaves" :)

    Question 3- It it basically showing that he conquered Africa.... I think?????

    1) It says that these guys killed these people because they were laughing at them. He kills everyone that makes him mad, or comes at him. In the back-round ships are coming at them, and in the comic it says "You always think that the whole world is coming at you." In the back-round, the "whole world" is coming at them.

    2)It means that the "native americans" think that the guy, WITH A GUN, is going to take them on a cruise to America. Really, he is taking them on a ship to America to be slaves. The irony is that really they are going to be punished and be beaten, but really they think they are going to have a fun time and then be relaxed.

    3) He conquered Africa. Then he is showing that we conquered it by standing on Africa with his arms high!

    1.You shouldn't kill people who annoy you.
    2.The blacks think they are going on a cruise but they are really going to be slaves.
    3.He dominates Africa.

    1)The ships in the back are coming to get them.
    2)The trade there talking about is slave trade.
    3)He is conquering the land.

    number one... people from another land are coming to attack.
    number two... a man is tricking some African Americans to come on a boat to become slaves.
    Number three... a European explorer takes over Africa

    1. they weren't going to get you they were just traveling around the world. 2.he wants them to be shipped over to another country to be slaves. 3.he owns the island and protects it.
